Five organisations have come together to create AllChemE, the Alliance for Chemical Sciences and Technologies in Europe, to coordinate their activities in order to promote chemistry and chemical engineering in Europe. It aims to influence the future strategies of the European Commission, other European groupings and national bodies.

CEFIC is the European Chemical Industry Council and aims to maintain and develop a prosperous chemical industry in Europe by promoting the best possible economic, social and environmental conditions to bring benefits to society with a commitment to the continuous improvement of all its activities including the safety, health and environmental performance.

CERC3 is the acronym for the Chairpersons and Directors of European Research Councils' Chemistry Committees (CERCCC or CERC3). It comprises representatives of national research councils in the EU member countries which have responsibility for funding research and related postgraduate training in basic chemistry.

arrow Coordination of research activities

The objectives of Community action in this field is to contribute to the creation of the European Research Area by stimulating and supporting programme coordination and joint activities conducted at national or regional level, as well as among European organisations, and thus help to develop the common knowledge base necessary for the coherent development of policies. These activities may be in any scientific and technological area, including in the thematic priority areas.

Founded in 1971, COST is an intergovernmental framework for European COoperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research, allowing the coordination of nationally funded research on a European level. COST Actions cover basic and pre-competitive research as well as activities of public utility.

EuCheMS is the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences and promotes co-operation in Europe between non-profit-making scientific and technical societies in the field of chemistry whose membership consists largely of individual qualified chemical and molecular scientists and whose interests include the science and/or practice of chemistry.

The aim of the EUROCORES (EUROpean Science Foundation COllaborative RESearch) Scheme is to create the critical mass necessary for scientific excellence by enabling researchers in different European countries to develop collaboration and scientific synergy.

At the Lisbon summit in March 2000, EU governments called for a better use of European research efforts through the creation of an internal market for science and technology - a ?European Research Area? (ERA). The EU's 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development is a major tool to support the creation of the European Research Area.

The European Commission embodies and upholds the general interest of the Union and is the driving force in the Union's institutional system. Its four main roles are to propose legislation to Parliament and the Council, to administer and implement Community policies, to enforce Community law (jointly with the Court of Justice) and to negotiate international agreements, mainly those relating to trade and cooperation.
