Workshop 2007 - Chemical Approaches to Diseases of Poverty
Many diseases that can be prevented or treated by relatively simple means in the developed world cause a devastating death toll in poor populations. Malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases are not only responsible for the death of millions of people world-wide every year, they also hamper economic development of poor countries. While better means of preventing, diagnosing and treating these diseases are important also for the citizens of the EU countries, advances in this area are crucial to enable economic growth in Africa and thereby reduce the pressure Europe is facing due to migration caused by poverty.
This workshop will bring together chemists from the ERA Chemistry countries to
identify areas where innovative chemistry can contribute to address some of the enormous challenges we are facing.
identify areas where innovative chemistry can contribute to address some of the enormous challenges we are facing.
Chemical approaches to the development of:
1) new means of disease prevention by vaccination;
2) fast, reliable, simple, and inexpensive methods to diagnose disease and
3) therapies that are affordable and practical for the treatment of these diseases.
Breakthroughs in fundamental chemical sciences will be needed in the area of biochemical mechanisms of disease, medicinal chemistry, synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry and many related areas. This workshop will bring together younger as well as experienced researchers from the ERA Chemistry countries to identify areas where chemists will be able to make a difference. In addition to researchers from academia, industrial scientists working in the area will be invited to contribute.
